SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 18, 2013) -- The U.S. Army Installation Management Command supported the semiannual career fair hosted by the Department of Defense Hiring Heroes program at the Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston Community Club Sept. 18, 2013.
Members of the IMCOM Army Career and Alumni Program staff helped operate the event and surveyed participants.
Col. Orlando Lopez, chief of operations for the IMCOM Operations directorate (G3), was the senior representative for the command.
"This was my first career fair, and this event was very educational to me," said Lopez. "I am due to retire in the coming months and this was a good preparation."
With the downsizing of government, job fairs like this increase in importance, said Mitchell Lee, transition coordinator on the IMCOM Operations Directorate (G3) Battle Staff. "Ensuring that all Soldiers that are transitioning are given an opportunity to attend an employment event is critical. We want to prepare the service member for the transition from military to civilian life," Lee said.
DoD has been conducting Hiring Heroes career fairs on Fort Sam Houston in March and September since 2005. These events provide excellent opportunities for wounded warriors, transitioning service members and spouses to network, collect information and speak face-to-face with DoD, other federal agency and private sector representatives about civilian opportunities.
More than 500 people attended the September fair, with 70 interviews set up before the event. "After attending numerous job fairs over the years, this is the most interviews I've seen," said Lee.
It took a lot of preparation and coordination with employers prior to the event, he said. The employers had to screen all resumes to ensure the individual qualifies and contact the potential employee beforehand.
The ultimate goal, said Lee, is "to make the transition of the Soldiers from military to civilian life transparent. How do we make it transparent ensuring that Soldiers leave one job and move onto another one?"
The Army Career and Alumni Program is a centrally funded and administered program that provides transition and job assistance services on major installations.
