With the ever-increasing number of veterans returning back to U.S. soil in need of jobs and homes, the federal government and several state legislatures have passed new rules to improve conditions for military members. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been among the most active, but has received a lot of support from the U.S. Department of Labor and other entities as well.
Labor laws revisited
TIME Magazine recently reported that the Labor Department has passed new rules that were made to adjust the ways in which veterans and handicapped citizens are hired at hundreds of thousands of federally contracted firms. According to the news provider, government contractors will be required to have at least 7 percent of their workforce made up of those with disabilities, and veterans as 8 percent of the total number of employees.
The source cited reports from The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press that indicated Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, believes these measures were needed to end the high number of veterans who are marginalized in the economy.
TIME Magazine added that several advocacy groups are expected to speak out against the new rules, as they might make certain components of equal employment opportunities more complex. However, most groups agree that measures need to be taken to ensure that veterans have a better situation to return to after serving in the nation's military.
Workshop to be held
WTSP 10, a Tampa Bay, Fla.-based news affiliate, recently announced that the Goodwill Manasota will be hosting a Jobs and Services Fair for veterans on September 7. Carried out in conjunction with Chase Bank, the event will be preceded by several workshops to prepare veterans for the challenges of finding the right employment and how to improve their chances of being hired.
"Veterans deserve our utmost respect and gratitude," Bob Rosinsky, Goodwill Manasota's President and CEO, told the news provider. "They shouldn't be treated like charity cases, because the skills they bring back to our community are vital to its success. With numerous employers in attendance, this outstanding event will provide a venue for veterans and employers to connect. I encourage all interested veterans to attend."
Regardless of which area a veteran lives in, workshops and job fairs such as this one are held regularly, and can be a big boost in the fight to find the right opportunities.
