A friend from Florida told James Allgood about the website, part of a program that matched qualifying military families with houses, mortgage-free.
Online last December, Allgood found one he liked: a gray ranch-style house on a quiet cul-de-sac in Virginia Beach.
It was only a few hours away from family and where he grew up in Mecklenburg County, Va. And with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it could fit his wife and four children much more comfortably than their small two-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg.
He submitted an application and waited for a reply.
