Question / Answer

Question:
How can I maintain the interest of the members of our volunteer organization or Family Readiness Group?

Answer:
Maintaining your members’ interest depends first on the purpose of your organization. Make sure that the events and activities you have supports the mission of your organization, which is why your members joined in the first place. Their participation needs to add value to their lives and suit their individual needs. In terms of meetings and activities, try to plan events that support a broad spectrum of interests and schedules. Alternate meeting dates and times if some of your members work during the day. Plan family events that allow members to bring their children. If you are truly unsure of what your members’ interests are, take a survey and ask them for ideas. Enlist members’ help in planning activities. When others are involved, they too have a vested interest in the event’s success.

Question:
How do strategic leaders affect the diversity in an organization?

Answer:
By virtue of the positions they hold, strategic leaders are looked up to in an organization. Because of this, it is important that they model appropriate social skills and workplace etiquette, demonstrating respect for all people. They should display openness, appreciation, and tolerance for different cultures and beliefs. Strategic Leaders should utilize cultural experiences to enrich and enhance the organization in reaching group objectives. They should demonstrate commitment, trust and open dialogue to encourage all group members to actively participate in the group process. Question:
How does cultural diversity impact communication in an organization?

Answer:
Local, regional or international cultural and ethnic values, traditions and customs may influence how a communication is given and received. It is important to be sensitive to cultural diversity in order to enhance communication and build mutual trust in relationships. Recognize also, that cultural diversity can impact how an audience interprets a speech or presentation. As a leader in an organization, provide opportunities for your employees to obtain diversity training.

Question:
How important is it for a leader to give equal attention to each team member?

Answer:
It is important for leaders to treat all members fairly, which does not necessarily equate to giving equal attention to each member. Some members may need more attention (direction, encouragement, etc.) than others, but the important thing is to make sure everyone is treated fairly. Showing favoritism to one member over another can breed jealousy and create conflict among the members, which does not support the formation of a unified team.

Question:
Should a leader do anything about the different subcultures/subgroups that often form in a large, complex organization?

Answer:
Because of diversity in large organizations, it is quite natural that subcultures/subgroups form. However, the organization's leader should try to utilize the strengths of each subculture/subgroup to ensure that they compliment and support the organization's values.

Question:
What affect do cultural differences have in a group?

Answer:
Groups, no matter how large or small they are, consist of unique individuals with unique personalities. Cultural differences can enrich a group’s experience as much as the variety of different personalities and talents that individuals bring to a group. The important thing to remember about cultural differences is to respect them, and understand that there may be language barriers to consider as well as different customs and beliefs. In a volunteer organization such as an Army Family Readiness Group (FRG), it is quite likely that you’ll have group members from different cultures. You may even be living in a foreign country. As an FRG leader, it is important to make all group members feel welcomed and included. Consider holding occasional activities that positively highlight the diversity in your group, such as a Mexican potluck or German Oktoberfest.

Question:
Why is it important for leaders to have diversity training?

Answer:
It is important for leaders (and individuals) to have diversity training so they can demonstrate more sensitivity to the various cultural, ethnic, and other differences in their organizations. For example, workplaces today are filled with individuals of all cultures, races, genders, ages, and sexual orientations. Employees have a right to be treated equally and to be respected by their leaders and by each other. In some cases, a leader who shows a lack of sensitivity regarding an individual’s culture, gender, race, age, etc., can have grave consequences for him/her, and perhaps be a serious liability for the organization.
