As a military spouse I have become quite familiar with the overwhelming support this country is showing service members & their families. First Lady Michelle Obama & Dr. Jill Biden have met with the military families across the country, learned about their successes and challenges, and made it their priority to support them by forming "Joining Forces". Joining Forces is a comprehensive national initiative to mobilize all sections of society and to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned.
I was so excited to learn one challenge that has been identified as a priority for support is Developing Career & Educational Opportunities for Military Spouses". The challenge is to reduce the barriers that currently prevent military spouses from maintaining a career or employment on a normal progression path regardless of relocation. The lack of broad-based reciprocity among the states to recognize professional licenses or certificates held by military spouses creates a significant barrier to employment as does the inability for many spouses to transfer their current position to a new location. Finally, employers may need more exposure to the benefits of hiring military spouses.
The Army Spouse Employment Partnership (ASEP) program has been very successful in trying to bridge this gap of understanding with corporate America & provide job opportunities to Army spouses that would allow them to relocate. The Army Partnership has signed a statement of support with 42 Fortune 500/100 companies that have a national employment footprint. Since 2003, over 84,000 Army spouses have been hired.
I give indirect credit to the ASEP program for my current situation. In my pursuit to find a job during my last PCS move, opportunity and timing were aligned. While working with ASEP, met someone that pointed me to employment with a company that respects my role as a military spouse and has shown flexibility with regard to my workplace location. Today, I feel empowered by my contributions and believe that - although location may still be impacting potential career options - growth, change and advancement opportunities with my employer have not been stifled.
In part due to the Joining Forces Initiative, ASEP will soon become Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP). As we get ready to embark on the summer PCS season, the timing for this program expansion is perfect. MSEP has the support of the DoD to increase corporate partnerships and job opportunities across the United States and globally. It is a tremendous development toward meeting the existing challenges for career pursuit.
