President Barack Obama plans to announce the first major overhaul Monday in more than 20 years of the military's much-derided program to help veterans make the transition from the military to work or school.

Forty-four percent of the men and women in the armed forces are moms or dads.

One and a half million of their children are school-age. Their education isn't just important for their own well-being. It is also a matter of "national security" because it is crucial to attracting and retaining an all-volunteer force, according to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who spoke at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center.

After Roller Coaster Ride, Soldiers Excited to Defend Olympic Gold Medals

One was labeled a prodigy after winning the world championship at the age of 16. The other was already a two-time Olympian and had won every match except for the big one.

Sgt. Vincent Hancock and Sgt. Glenn Eller showed up at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 as the favorites to win and neither disappointed. The two U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Soldiers brought home gold medals, set Olympic records, and secured their place in Olympic lore forever.

First Lady brings 'Let's Move' to London Games

First Lady Michelle Obama and a plethora of former and current U.S. Olympic stars helped musical performers entertain children today, during "Let's Move! London Tic-Toc."

The purpose of the fun-filled day of entertainment and celebrity gazing was to get children moving and involved in athletics, the thrust of Obama's "Let's Move" initiative to combat childhood obesity.

Army Spouse Competes in First Medal Event of London Olympics

In front of an enthusiastic crowd eager to witness presentation of the first medals of the London Olympic Games, Jamie Gray, wife of a U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Soldier, competed in women's 10-meter air rifle June 28, at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Gray, a two-time Olympian, finished fifth after making the final in the event for her second consecutive Olympics. She shot a qualification score of 397 followed with a final round of 102.7 for an overall score of 499.7, a little more than three points behind China's Siling Yi, who prevailed with 502.9 points.

Special Day Celebrates Military Heritage at Youth Enrichment Camp

During the week of July 8-13, the Army Reserve Child, Youth and School Services, CYSS, held their annual Enrichment Camp in conjunction with the YMCA at Camp Hanes.

Of the 200 children who spent the week there, about half were children of Army Reserve Soldiers, according to Christy Burns the chief of Family Programs for the 81st Regional Support Command. The other half were from all around the state and not affiliated with the military.

Construction Training Program for Vets

In partnership with the Veterans Innovation Center and Wiregrass Technical College, community leaders in Valdosta, Ga., the regional Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Chapter and other Veteran organizations, are using their combined reach to solicit applications from recently discharged Veterans who have an interest in pursuing a career in the construction trades.

23 States Ease Professional Licensing For Spouses

Twelve more states have adopted laws to make it easier for military spouses to have portable careers, more than doubling the number since February, when first lady Michelle Obama began to draw attention to the issue.

That means 23 states now have laws to address problems spouses can face when they try to bring one state’s license or certification to another state when they move with their service member.
