April marks this year's Military Child Month, or the time during which organizations and local communities celebrate children of active and former service members. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, there are more than 1.8 million military children in the country. During April, the DOD seeks to honor these children through a series of events, donations and programs.
Children of military members are greatly affected by their parents' service, whether they're having to move homes every couple of months or dealing with the regular absence of a parent. The programs held during Military Child Month are meant to show support for this rising number of children, providing them with opportunities to celebrate their country and receive thanks from the community.
