FORT BLISS, Texas — Fort Bliss officially has a new leader after Commanding Gen. Dana Pittard handed the reins over Thursday to a former classmate and old friend.
Hundreds turned out as Major Gen. Sean MacFarland was officially made new commanding general of the post.
MacFarland and Pittard were classmates at West Point.
"We have built a division from scratch. And look what we have built. You've got to be proud of that. Of what we've collectively done together," said Pittard.
Both have ties to El Paso: Pittard's a native and Fort Bliss was MacFarland's first duty station.
Today's ceremony brought out different emotions for each.
