The Do-It-Yourself (DITY) move offers an alternative to commercial household goods carriers, making it easy for Army families to earn some extra cash and reduce the stress by guaranteeing that their household goods arrive with them at their new duty stations.

For more details, check with your Installation Transportation Office (ITO), because the DITY move must be approved in advance. You can also get a cash advance to make your personal choice from a wide selection of rental equipment and services.

DITY moving allowance

Soldiers with an effective date of orders on or after Feb. 1,1998, will receive more money to move themselves during permanent change of station and temporary duty moves.

The Joint Federal Travel Regulations now authorize the Army to provide a DITY allowance of 95 percent of what it would cost the government to move household goods by contractor. Up until February 1998, the allowance was only 80 percent. Now more Army families can take advantage of this money saving and stress reducing alternative. The Army will also benefit because they will save money on record keeping, storage costs and [damage] claims.
