Making a difference this weekend

Make a Difference Day began as a magazine idea for a national contest 18 years ago, and today, that same program is in place through USA Weekend and still going strong.

But Make a Difference Day has become more than just a reward program for community service — it has become the day to solicit volunteers to help within the community, and Fort Leonard Wood is no exception. Several projects designed to improve or beautify the installation will be tackled this weekend by a literal army of volunteers across the post.

And none of these volunteers expect compensation or glory of winning. These folks are giving up their Saturday because they know it’s the right thing to do, and when the day is done, they will feel good about themselves and their day of volunteering.

You can be part of this day and help make a difference, too. On page B1, you’ll find a related story to making a difference, along with points of contact and numbers to call to help out.
If this weekend doesn’t work for you, there are 364 other days you can volunteer, and I am sure the editors at USA Weekend wouldn’t mind at all. Find a group, organization or activity that needs your help…and you will find that satisfaction runs both ways.  Your efforts will be greatly appreciated and you’ll find that giving back to your community is a very satisfying, worthwhile activity.

Your talents might be in painting, planting or just picking up litter. Senior centers may just need a friendly ear and a kind heart. For those with a passion for pets, many animal shelters rely on volunteers to keep the critters safe. Whatever your passion, there is likely a group here in Pulaski County that could use your time, energy or donation.

So, make a difference this weekend and find that activity that can use your talents. It’s the right thing to do.You can make a difference.
