Question:
How is sick leave determined for full-time and part-time employees (military and civilian)?

Answer:
"Soldiers, unlike civilian employees, do not accrue sick leave. Short-term sick leave for military personnel may be authorized by the Soldier's commanding officer on an as needed basis. Soldiers who require sick leave, maternity leave, and/or convalescent leave associated with an illness or injury will be required to obtain the appropriate documentation and approval through their Military Treatment Facility and commanding officer. For Department of the Army Civilian employees, sick leave is provided for periods of incapacitation due to illness, injury, pregnancy, or medical confinement, and should be conserved for long periods of recuperation or serious illnesses. These benefits accrue to full-time employees accrue 4 hours per pay period or 14 days per year regardless of grade or length of service. "

Answer:
Sponsors should update theirs and their family's Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) records whenever your eligibility and personal information changes. This includes changes in your military career, address, family status, etc.

Question:
How soon after I retire from the military do I have to execute my final Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move?

Answer:
Military retirees have up to five years to execute their final Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move, but the option must be renewed annually within the five-year window.

Question:
What are some of the legal issues I need to be aware of if I have a child while living OCONUS?

Answer:
There are several important things you will need to do if you have a baby while stationed overseas. You will need to get your newborn enrolled in DEERS as soon as possible to ensure continuance of medical care coverage. This will require that you obtain a certificate of live birth from the hospital or birthing center where your baby was born as well as a completed DEERS Enrollment form, DD Form 1172 signed by the newborn’s sponsor. You will also need to register your child with the appropriate U.S. or foreign authorities (in some instances, both). This registration documents the child’s citizenship and will enable you to get your child a passport. The Personnel Detachment office in your military community can assist you in completing the paperwork required to obtain a passport from the servicing American embassy or U.S. consulate. If one or both parents are not U.S. citizens, your home country embassy or consulate authorities should be contacted for guidance on birth registration procedures. You may also need to contact the nearest U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services. If applicable, you should also apply for a Social Security number for your newborn.

What are the rules for flying space available on Air Mobility Command (AMC) flights to overseas locations?

Answer:
Space Available travel on Air Mobility Command (AMC) flights offers relatively free air travel (small fees may apply to cover airport, customs and immigration fees) for authorized personnel (e.g., service members and their dependent family members, retirees, etc.). There are a number of policies and procedures that apply to Space A travel such as the category assignments for perspective travelers that prioritizes the waiting list. For example, an active duty Soldier traveling on emergency leave would have priority over a retired Soldier traveling for leisure. Contact an AMC customer service representative for specific details on space available travel.

Question:
What are the service obligations for Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) graduates?

Answer:
All Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) graduates incur an eight-year military service obligation that may be accomplished by serving on active or reserve duty. ROTC cadets have no military obligation during the first two years they are in the program (or the first year in the case of scholarship winners). In the third year of the program, non-scholarship cadets agree to accept a commission in the U.S. Army upon completion of the required academic and military courses.

Question:
What are the sources of Family Readiness Group funds and how can they be used?

Answer:
According to the Operation READY’s Army Family Readiness Group (FRG) Leader's Handbook, the commander can provide the FRG with some appropriated funds (the unit’s share of the Defense budget) and non-appropriated funds (allocated from net revenues earned by post activities). These funds must be used to support legitimate FRG activities. The FRG can also receive (strictly voluntary) donations from members and/or businesses and can also plan and conduct fundraisers. There are specific guidelines on how much money the FRG can maintain, how the money is used, who is authorized to handle the money (i..e., fund custodians), and how FRG accounts are established. The Army FRG Leader Handbook provides extensive information on this subject and identifies DODD 5500.7R (Joint Ethics Regulation), AR 600-20 (Army Command Policy), DA PAM 608-47 (Guide to Establishing Family Support Groups – which as since been replaced by the Operation READY materials), and DODI 1000.15 (Private Organizations on DoD Installations) as other references.

Question:
What are the specific Army regulations that relate to fundraising activities, particularly for Family Readiness Groups?

Answer:

Question:
What happens if my Military ID card expires while my Soldier (sponsor) is deployed?

Answer:
Without a valid military ID card you cannot get mail (from your sponsor's organization), use the hospital, Post Exchange (PX), commissary or other facilities, and may even be denied entry to the post.

Question:
What is "Space-A Travel?"

Answer:
Space A travel refers to the relatively free air travel (small fees may apply to cover airport, customs and immigration fees) for authorized personnel (e.g., service members and their dependent family members, retirees, etc.) using Air Mobility Command transportation if "space is available."
