Question / Answer

Question:
Are there any rules or considerations a leader of a military unit or volunteer organization overseas (OCONUS) should be aware of that are different from someone holding that same position back in the continental United States (CONUS)?

Answer:
As a leader of a military unit or other type of organization overseas, it is important to remember that you are, in a sense, an ‘ambassador for the US.’ Your actions reflect those of all Americans. Therefore, it is important that you respect host nation laws, customs, traditions, and beliefs. Where possible (and applicable), try to coordinate events and activities with your host nation partners. This helps build a positive relationship with your host nation partners and also provides an opportunity for members of your organization to be exposed to new cultures.

Question:
How does an organization turn its vision into reality?

Answer:
Leaders need to communicate the organization’s vision to all members of the organization and develop a strategic plan to enable them to realize it. The plan should include both short-term and long-term goals and leaders at all levels should develop their own plans to achieve these goals. It is important to inspire all members of an organization to share the organization’s vision, take ownership of the plan developed to realize this vision, and take pride in the successes achieved along the way. It is also important for leaders to develop a mechanism for the organization to measure its success in achieving the vision and to monitor the organization's progress in achieving it. Question:
How should a leader cope with the opportunities and challenges of being a leader, to include mistakes he/she makes?

Answer:
A good leader should welcome new opportunities and challenges, as they are the very things that help an individual grow and develop. Develop a network of peers with whom you can share your challenges and support each other’s efforts. Develop a plan to address the opportunities and challenges of being a leader and include personal limits to avoid leader burnout. Note also that you should never cover up your errors. Admit your mistakes and take the necessary course of action to correct them. Demonstrate willingness to support team members and subordinates when they make mistakes as well. One should learn from all experiences – mistakes and successes.

Question:
What is the purpose of an organization vision statement?

Answer:
A vision statement is key to an organization’s strategic planning. The organization’s vision should relate to the purpose of its existence. It should incorporate aspects that relate to the organization’s members that would motivate them to align with management in achieving goals related to the organization’s vision. An organization’s vision should be based on the organization’s current state and focus on its leaders (and members) want to see it in the future. It should promote interest and commitment; build confidence among members and other stakeholders; provide direction and purpose; and develop a sense of ownership among members of the organization.

Question:
What role does an advisor to a volunteer organization play?

Answer:
An advisor’s role is to give moral support to the organization and its leaders. Typically, individuals are asked to be an advisor because of their experience or because they are in a position to obtain information or assistance for the organization. Many times, advisors serve as mentors to the group’s leaders. They may have even held some of the leadership positions others now hold and can offer advice and guidance to them. An advisor should show an interest in the activities of the group and attend meetings whenever possible. He/she should be familiar with all the laws and/or regulations that apply to the organization. An advisor’s role is to ‘advise’ – not to lead, but to listen; to share experiences that will help the group grow; to serve as a positive role model; and most importantly, to encourage independent thinking and new ideas. Advisors should avoid showing favoritism to group members; acknowledging and encouraging the contributions and talents of all group members. They should praise successful efforts and make members feel their contributions count. Note also that advisors have a public role of respect and trust. They should use this role to advance the goals of the group – never for personal advantage.

Question:
Why is it important for a leader to be flexible?

Answer:
There are a number of reasons why a leader should be somewhat flexible. For example, in order for an organization to grow, its leaders must be open to change. Change often requires individuals to modify their behaviors, particularly when the change involves new technology. Therefore people, and leaders in particular, must be open to change and flexible enough to embrace the modifications. Additionally, leaders should remain vigilant for unexpected opportunities for the organization that may arise and exercise the flexibility needed to respond quickly in order to take advantage of them.
