What is disability insurance?
There are different types of disability insurance. For example, Social Security Disability Insurance benefits are paid to individuals who have worked in jobs covered by Social Security who have a medical condition what meets Social Security's definition of disability. The cash benefits are paid to people who are unable to work for a year or more because of a disability. You can purchase private disability insurance to protect yourself either for short-term periods where you may be unable to work due to an injury or illness or for long-term/permanent disability.
