What are the different Medicare Plan options?
Medicare is a Federal health insurance program specifically designated for people who are 65 years of age and older, and people with disabilities. There are two basic types of Medicare health plans, the original Medicare Plan and the Medicare + choice plan. The original Medicare plan includes Part A and Part B coverage. Part A is free hospital insurance that helps to cover services such as hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, some home health care, and hospice care. Medicare Part B is supplementary insurance with a monthly premium that helps pay for physician services, laboratory tests, outpatient hospital services and medical equipment. The Medicare + Choice Plans include: Medicare Managed Care Plan, which is similar to an HMO, and Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service plans. These plans may provide benefits such as coordination of care or reducing out-of-pocket expenses and may offer additional benefits such as prescription drugs. Individuals who choose the Original Medicare Plan often opt to purchase supplemental insurance to cover your out-of-pocket hospital and doctor bills. This supplemental insurance is referred to as a Medigap policy. Medigap policies typically cover the costs for coinsurance and co-payments under the Original Medicare Plan and may also cover the Original Medicare Plan deductibles. They may also cover more of the things that Medicare does not cover such as prescription drugs. More information about Medicare options can be found on Medicare’s website at
