What affect do cultural differences have in a group?
Groups, no matter how large or small they are, consist of unique individuals with unique personalities. Cultural differences can enrich a group’s experience as much as the variety of different personalities and talents that individuals bring to a group. The important thing to remember about cultural differences is to respect them, and understand that there may be language barriers to consider as well as different customs and beliefs. In a volunteer organization such as an Army Family Readiness Group (FRG), it is quite likely that you’ll have group members from different cultures. You may even be living in a foreign country. As an FRG leader, it is important to make all group members feel welcomed and included. Consider holding occasional activities that positively highlight the diversity in your group, such as a Mexican potluck or German Oktoberfest.
