Question / Answer

What should I look for when choosing a nursing home?

There are a number of things to look for when selecting a nursing home or assisted living facility such as: whether or not it is Medicare and/or Medicaid-certified; your out-of-pocket costs, if any; the cleanliness and professionalism of its appearance and staff; room size and comfort; safety features; menu selection and quality of food; programs and activities; and the actual level of nursing care provided. Visit facilities with a prepared list of your specific needs and questions you have. Consult your health care provider for more information.

Will TRICARE cover the cost for nursing home care?

Long-term care, also known as “custodial” care, is not a TRICARE or Medicare covered benefit. Long-term care refers to assisting individuals with services associated with daily living such as bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, etc. However, TRICARE and Medicare both provide coverage (with co-payments) for care delivered in a skilled nursing facility, where nursing and rehabilitation services are provided by licensed nurses, physical and/or occupational therapists, etc. and are determined to be medically necessary by a Medicare/TRICARE authorized physician. Other health insurance coverage may have different benefits. Contact your heath insurance customer service representative for more information.
