September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

The U.S. military needs volunteers to be healthy enough to answer the Nation's call but more than 12.7 million U.S. children and teenagers are classified as overweight or obese.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month to bring attention to the facts that childhood obesity is a health issue that puts children at risk for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke but it is preventable through lifestyle changes.

Suicide Prevention Month: #BeThere

September 1st marks the start of Suicide Prevention Month and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is asking for the entire nation’s help in reducing Veteran suicide. VA is calling on community leaders, supervisors, colleagues, friends, and family members to BeThere for Veterans and Service members starting with a simple act, which can play a pivotal role in preventing suicide.

For many wounded warriors, the Paralympics represent the culmination of a comeback from a traumatic event. Many service member and veteran Paralympians have suffered physical injuries like visual impairments and amputations, as well as invisible wounds like traumatic brain injuries. The games give those Paralympians a chance to return to healthy, successful and active lifestyles through camaraderie and teamwork.

U.S. Department of Education Announces $2.5 Million in Grants to Operate Centers for Parents of Children with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Education announced today the award of $2.5 million in grants to operate 23 Community Parent Resource Centers in 17 states and a Parent Training and Information Center to serve American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of Palau. The centers provide parents with the training and information they need to work with professionals in meeting the early intervention and special needs of children with disabilities.

VA Awards $300 Million More in Grants to Help End Veteran Homelessness

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today awarded approximately $300 million more in grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to help thousands of very low-income Veteran families around the nation who are permanently housed or transitioning to permanent housing. The SSVF grant program provides access to crucial services to prevent homelessness for Veterans and their families.

OPM Announces Open Season for Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced that there will be a Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Open Season from Thursday, September 1, through Friday, September 30, 2016. During that time, eligible employees will be able to select (or choose) among the different types of – and multiples of – coverage that FEGLI offers, including Option C coverage on the lives of a spouse and eligible children.

Most Legal Services are Free to U.S. Army Soldiers, Family and Retirees

Legal services can be expensive, but not for U.S. Army service members and retirees here at JBLM. Legal assistance available through civilian law providers is free, and covers everything from family law and estate planning to military administration and consumer law issues, along with free tax preparation from January to April.

Introducing the 2016 Volunteers of the Year

USO Volunteers of the Year are nominated by their center staff, and chosen by their regional leadership to be a USO Volunteer of the Quarter. From there, a panel votes to select the USO Volunteer of the Year, Stateside and USO Volunteer of the Year, Overseas.

Two individuals are selected each year out of our 30,000 volunteers around the world. They represent the best of our USO core values that our our volunteers exhibit every day.

SecArmy Lays Out Priorities at his First Town Hall

Fanning spoke on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Pentagon to a packed house of Army Soldiers and civilians on his priorities for the coming months as part of his first town hall meeting there. He said he plans to give such talks more often in the future.

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is a national campaign of action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of natural and man-made emergencies and disasters that could affect us where we live, work, learn, and visit. NPM is commemorated each September to emphasize the importance of preparedness and serve as a reminder of the simple actions we can take to prepare for when disaster strikes.
