CPT Swenson Awarded Medal of Honor

CPT William Swenson Awarded the Medal of Honor

"In seven hours of continuous fighting, Swenson braved intense enemy fire, and willfully put his life in danger against the enemy's main effort, multiple times in service of his fallen and wounded comrades, his unit, his country, and his endangered Afghan partners. Displaying conspicuous gallantry at the risk of his own life and well beyond the call of duty, Swenson would be a most deserving recipient of the Medal of Honor."

Senior leaders ask for input to keep family programs

While Army family programs will remain a top priority for the service, the current fiscal situation means cuts and readjustments will have to be made, the Army's top leaders said Monday. In order to make family programs more efficient, however, and to keep the cuts as transparent as possible, Secretary of the Army John M. McHugh said he needs the help of family members.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Protect your baby from sudden infant death syndrome

The birth of a child is a miraculous moment. It is a time that is filled with hope as new parents, family members and friends anticipate the many years of joy and happiness that normally accompany the arrival of a newborn. Unfortunately, about 4,000 of these babies die every year in the United States, and the cause of death for these children is often not obvious or immediately known. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is responsible for nearly half of these deaths.

Single Service Member Programs Promote Camaraderie, Resilience

Drive around any military installation, and along with barracks buildings and training facilities, you’ll see family housing, child development centers, schools, and signs publicizing family-centric activities. Gone are the days when the old joke that “if the military wanted you to have a family, it would have issued you one” held more than a grain of truth.

Military Family Appreciation Month

Military Family Appreciation Month

Each year the President signs a proclamation declaring November Military Family Month. Last year President Obama said that our nation owes "each day of security and freedom that we enjoy to the members of our Armed Forces and their families. Behind our brave service men and women, there are family members and loved ones who share in their sacrifice and provide unending support."

Commissaries Offer Holiday Savings

Military families facing the annual ritual of planning their holiday menus need look no farther than their commissary for quality and savings. Throughout November, the commissary’s industry partners – vendors, suppliers and brokers – are collaborating with stores to offer discounts beyond everyday savings. Overseas stores may have substitute events for certain promotional programs.

Checklist for New Military Spouses

Checklist for New Military Spouses

Welcome to the military family. As the husband or wife of a service member, you are an active participant in the military lifestyle. You are also eligible for many benefits, including health care, shopping privileges on base, and access to base recreation facilities and other programs. You'll find it helpful to attend orientations and briefings for military spouses, and to read information that comes to you. Once you arrive at the military installation, visit the Community Service Center or Family Support Center as soon as possible to get up-to-date.

Warrior Care Month

Each November the military services observe Warrior Care Month to honor the service and sacrifice of wounded, ill and injured service members, their families, caregivers, and the professionals who support them. This year's theme is Warrior Care - Building a Ready and Resilient Force.

Beware Mortgage Modification Offers

Beware of home mortgage 'modification special offers,' even from your own mortgage company

Mortgage companies and their relationships with the financial community have made lots of news recently. However, we have seen a new wrinkle in "mortgage modification" offers from companies that are offering Soldiers who are up to date in their mortgage payments. Some Soldiers who have never even missed a payment are now offered a mortgage "modification special offer" to reduce their monthly payments. So, what's the catch?

PCSing with kids before the end of the school year: Understanding accelerated withdrawal

As U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt approaches the holiday season, more and more members from the Schweinfurt community will permanently change station, or PCS. Whether they depart over the holiday season or sometime before summer break, families will have to remove school-age children from Schweinfurt schools earlier than the official end of the 2013-2014 school year.
