Some online courses are scheduled for a specific time. You meet at your computers, listen to the lecture and interact.

Other courses provide materials and opportunities for interaction, but you can "attend" class as it fits into your schedule.

  • When you respond to other's comments, the responses are captured on message boards so students can read them when they access the classroom.

Some schools offer self-paced online learning that is provided through guided independent-study programs.

  • You are given an overall time frame of 24 months, for example, and you work through the required coursework at your own pace. You would have frequent contact with your instructors and program mentor, but you may not have the interactions with other students.
