STATE AWARD: Fort Wainwright, Alaska Teen Council
Fort Wainwright: "Army brats" collect clothing and household goods for needy families. It was 20 degrees in parts of Alaska on Oct. 24 1998, but the Fort Wainwright Teen Council - made up of nine youths living on the Army base - didn't let cold deter them from spreading warmth. Well aware of the instability and pressure put on military families who must move often, they wanted to do a project that would help keep families together by easing the burdens they face. They advertised and collected one TV, 81 cans of food, 483 pieces of infant/toddler clothing, 15 sets of baby bedding, 132 pieces of girls clothing, 100 items of boys clothing, 96 items of women's clothing, 120 items of men's clothing, 30 sweaters, 40 jackets, 11 blankets and five sleeping bags for the Salvation Army thrift store and a rescue mission where they'd seen children playing with broken toys who did not have warm or well-fitting clothes. $2,000 award benefits Fort Wainwright Teen Council.
