Mrs. Doris Bennett

Emma Marie Baird Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service

1998 – Doris Bennett, Fort Carson, CO

Mrs. Doris Bennett was nominated by United States Army Forces Command for her service in many ACS programs at Fort Carson. Since 1974 she contributed over 24,200 hours of volunteer service in her position as the chairperson for the Consumer Affairs and Financial Assistance program. She reviews the records of over 2,000 soldiers and family members annually for financial assistance and contributions from the ACS food locker. These families are often in great financial difficulties, often without food or unable to pay their bills. Her courteous manner and ever-present enthusiasm enables her to establish a rapport with these individuals when requesting assistance. Mrs. Bennett goes beyond the call of duty by on numerous occasions assisting soldiers after her scheduled volunteer hours when no other staff members were available. For the past four years she has devoted an average of six hours per day, five days a week assisting soldiers and their family members. Her dedication and devotion are an inspiration to the entire corps of volunteers at Army Community Service.

Mrs. Bennett also serves as the ACS point of contact for local agencies such as Care and Share Commodities, Low-Income Energy Assistance and Share-Colorado. During her tenure at ACS, Mrs. Bennett has served on many committees, most notably, the Volunteer Recognition Steering Committee where she played a key role in recognizing volunteers and staff for the past ten years. Mrs. Bennett's volunteer contributions have had a direct and positive impact on the quality of life of soldiers and their family members in the Fort Carson community.

In addition, Mrs. Bennett contributes to other organizations on the installation and in Colorado Springs notably with the church, NCO Wives Club and the Girl Scouts.
