1998 – Charles Shelby, Fort Sam Houston, TX

Charles ShelbyMr. Charles Shelby was nominated by the United States Army Medical Command for their service in many ACS programs at Fort Sam Houston. Since 1988, Mr. Charles Shelby contributed over 8,000 hours of volunteer service while serving as the Information and Referral volunteer programs at Fort Sam Houston. In this position, Mr. Shelby welcomes clients into the ACS center providing them with warm and caring support and equipping them with knowledge about community resources. His warm caring support of customers new to the area contributes significantly to their welcome and ability to feel at home.

He designed and implemented a record keeping system that captures customer statistics on a daily basis. He reconciles the data each month and prepares a summary sheet to be used for the annual report. This summary is utilized by program managers to analyze categories of customers and project future needs.

He also assists the staff with the Community Forum, special events, and training. Mr. Shelby's volunteer efforts have earned him the respect and appreciation of the Fort Sam Houston military community.
