Northern New York Information

Jefferson County
Jefferson County is located in the northern tier of New York State at the juncture of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. We are known for diverse natural resources, dozens of welcoming small communities and hamlets, a bountiful agriculture sector, and the world class 1000 Islands tourism region. We are the home of the U.S. Army's Fort Drum and embrace our military soldiers and families as valued friends and neighbors in our County.

City of Watertown
Renowned for its Public Square, Watertown welcomes you to northern New York. Settled in 1800 and incorporated as a city in 1869, Watertown is located just 25 miles south of the Canadian border and 70 miles north of Syracuse. The city developed as an industrial center because of the hydro power available from the Black River, however much of the industry is now gone. Although the population of Watertown is 26,700, the daytime population doubles, as Watertown is still the regional center for government and commerce serving the entire north country region. Watertown is Jefferson County's largest community and in addition to being the county seat, it is the host community for Jefferson Community College.

City of Watertown NY Overview

Mission: The City of Watertown, NY fosters an environment that ensures the health, safety and general welfare of the community and its visitors by providing responsive services. Our city government provides leadership to enhance the quality of life while preserving our heritage.
